2018’s most popular RAF £2 revealed!

The votes are in and you have chosen your favourite 2018 RAF £2 coin!

Following the reveal of the five brand new £2 coins issued by The Royal Mint this year to commemorate the Centenary of the Royal Air Force, we asked Change Checkers to vote for their favourite design on our previous blog introducing the new coins

Each stunning design features an iconic RAF aircraft, from the modern F35 Lightning to the famous Spitfire, with the first coin in the series depicting the badge of the RAF to celebrate the Royal Air Force as a whole.

Our poll has now closed, and I do have to say that the results were very close! But we can now reveal that the most popular RAF £2 coin design has been chosen and first place goes to the magnificent Sea King, receiving just over 28% of your votes.

1. Sea King

This is the fourth coin in the RAF series and although it’s available to pre-order now, it will be officially released in August for those of you looking to add the Sea King £2 to your collection.

Known as the ‘angel on our shoulders’, the Sea King helicopter acted exclusively in a search and rescue role from 1978, with the final mission taking place on the 4th of October 2015.

In 2012, Prince William himself flew a Sea King during a training exercise which ended in a rescue mission when two girls were swept out to sea in a riptide.

2. Spitfire

Coming in a very close second is one of the most famous planes ever built, the Supermarine Spitfire.

This is the second coin in the series and is available now to add to your collection. The coin beautifully depicts the iconic image of the Spitfire, designed by Reginald Mitchell.

First flying in 1936, this short range interceptor aircraft was known as the backbone of the RAF Fighter Command and was much loved amongst its pilots.

3. Vulcan

In third place is the legendary Vulcan bomber, the third coin in the RAF series, which is also available now to add to your collection.

This coin captures the instantly recognisable delta wing of the awesome Vulcan in flight, an exhilarating sight to behold.

Unmatched by any other bomber from the jet-age, this aircraft truly was the epitome of power during its service from 1956 until 1984.

4. Badge

Voted in fourth place is the RAF badge coin, the first coin in the series which has been available to order since the start of the year.

Royal Mint designer, Rhys Morgan created this coin based upon the badge which was originally used at the first Air Council meeting in 1918 and then registered in the 1920s with the Royal College of Arms.

Capturing the spirit of the RAF as a whole, this design symbolises the RAF’s resilience over the past century.

5. Lightning F35

Last, but by no means least, is the Lightning or F35 fighter jet, the fifth coin in the series. This coin can be pre-ordered now and will be officially released in September.

The F35 is the RAF’s newest aircraft which operates alongside the Typhoon, creating a potent mix of stealth and power.

Reviving Britain’s sea-bourne operations, these supersonic planes are set to be in service by December this year.

Overall, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who voted in our poll and helped us determine the most popular RAF £2 coin.

I think the design of the Sea King £2 perfectly captures the dedication of the RAF and this superb machine to ensure the safety of the people of the UK, and perhaps this is the reason why it has been voted as your favourite.

It is a fact that the Royal Mint, like so many other companies these days, are simply getting greedy and over egging the pudding. I have given up collecting new coins as they are too expensive now. I agree that staff in banks and post offices are creaming off the new commemorative coins as they are just NOT out there.
Please Royal Mint just cool it and stop producing so many as it just devalues coin collecting much as the post office did with stamps.

I think the royal mint is overdoing their coin releasing, it’s becoming a case of it’s Monday wonder what new coin they are issuing today? I’m sure that they have on average issued at least one a week for the last year if you take the 26 alphabet coins of the 10p series into consideration. So many people I have spoken to or communicated in other ways with are getting very Peed off with it.

Hi Eddie, there certainly have been a lot of new releases recently, although there have also been lots of important anniversaries to be celebrated this year too. It will be exciting once we see these coins entering circulation and turning up in our change I’m sure.

The way I see it is, more and more people are using cards and contactless payment reducing the amount of coins needed. The royal mint produce the coins but only the treasury can order them for release in circulation. The royal mint need the income from coin sales so by releasing so many new ones they ensure us collectors keep buying them as they are likely to soon be bunc only

I have to agree with you Eddie, the Mint are taking the Mickey with the amount of coins they’re releasing. To be honest, for me at least, whamming out new coins at such a ridiculous rate just takes the fun out of collecting. I doubt it will change any time soon either. They’ve found themselves a willing public who seem to have more money than sense, happy to buy what-ever is thrown at them. None of these coins will be worth a significant amount in our lifetime, if ever, because so many are produced, (excepting the odd limited edition or low mintage coin). It seems BU coins are churned out until interest wanes and it’s no linger worth striking any more.

I love coins, and I really enjoyed collecting them as they were produced. These days you can’t keep up. My income isn’t huge, far from it. Thanks to the Royal Mint and it’s desire to make more money than most of us can ever imagine, I’ve reached the stage where I can no longer afford to collect them. So thanks to the Royal Mint for taking away a hobby I once loved.

‘Wait for them to turn up in your change’, I hear you cry ~ yeah right, that’ll be when hell freezes over.

Hi Eddie, I am reasonably new to collecting, but I do agree with your comments. After registering I also started to get mail from 5 other companies, even after writing to ask them to take me off their lists, I still get 15 – 20 offers a month which all have “great deals” and discounts. My better half worked out the cost of accepting offers over a 3 week period. I would be paying £260 per month for 10 months or over £8300 for cash.

This is all very well but these new £2 coins as well as the other 2018 £2 coins, will be very hard to find in your change as they will be picked out by post office staff and cash distributors banks etc.
    A bit like the A-Z 10ps I haven’t found one !
To market it as “The great British coin hunt” is quite frankly farcical ! Dissolutioned moi ?

    • Rachel Hooper on August 7, 2018 at 2:17 pm

Hi David, we’re not sure when these coins will enter circulation or how many of each design are being struck, but I’m sure they will be highly collectable due to the theme of the coins. It’s a shame that so many of the A-Z 10ps haven’t found their way into our pockets yet, but more will be released this year and into next, so I would remain hopeful that you will come across some in your change at some point, but as you say, it can be quite disappointing.
