The Gruffalo 50p Coin – what we know so far…

The UK’s incredibly popular Snowman 50p coin is to be followed up by a brand new Gruffalo 50p coin.

*** UPDATE ***

The Royal Mint have now announced that this highly anticipated coin will be available to order from the 19th of February! With just over a week to go, we can’t wait to finally see the Gruffalo 50p!

The new Gruffalo 50p is expected to be released by The Royal Mint in 2019

According to the Royal Proclamation, published on 9 November there will be a new coin:

– A depiction of the Gruffalo accompanied by the inscription “THE GRUFFALO”.

The coin will be issued in 2019 to celebrate 20 years of Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo, with commemorative collector’s editions  in Cupro-Nickel and Silver being made available. It is not yet clear whether this coin will be issued for circulation.

The next 50p collecting craze?

Although all the details have not been released yet and the actual design is still top secret, it seems likely that the Gruffalo 50p coin will be as popular with the British public as Peter Rabbit and friends have proved over the last three years.

    • Rachel Hooper on December 10, 2018 at 8:50 am

Hi Theresa, the 50ps in this blog won’t be coming out until next year so you won’t have received them yet. If you are missing the 2018 50ps please can you email [email protected] with your account number and our team will look into this for you. Thanks, Rachel

I like getting your coins as they display well in your books.I have cases of other coins in plastic coin holders
I try not to buy Royal Mint as they don’t display well ,when they come in a card all you can do is put them in a shoe box.
I look forward to whats coming out next year as I collect all values only uk coins & notes.
I find Jersey,Gernsy,& the other british coins sometimes look better the uk coins.
Its a pity the new 10p has not come south in our change yet.

    • Rachel Hooper on December 5, 2018 at 2:49 pm

Hi Graham, thanks so much for your kind words. I’m really glad you like our products. Those 10ps really are proving hard to find aren’t they? We’re based down in the south as well and only a couple of people in our team have come across any of the coins in their change. Here’s hoping we start finding some more now that another 2.6 million have been released. Thanks, Rachel

I v e just received the battle of Hastings. Coin p, in pictures it looks quite large, quite disappointed, but I will keep this one, but don’t want anymore of battle of Hastings coins,

    • Rachel Hooper on December 5, 2018 at 8:40 am

Hi Nici, the Battle of Hastings 50p is the standard 27.3 mm size of all circulation 50ps. Before 1997 the coins were larger – 30 mm. Thanks, Rachel

Given that the original Britannia and D Day 50ps were large sized and the rest small, will the reissued 50ps ALL be small sized.
Also, now that the Paddington Bear 50ps are in circulation will you issue I D cards for them, the 4 RAF £2 coins and the Captain Cook £2 coin so that I can add them to my Change Checker book.

looking forward to the gruffalo and any 50p’s to come with it

  7. brian dignall on December 4, 2018 at 2:15 pm

because the 50p is 50 years old in 2019 you should re-issue ones from the past to help our collections eg kew gardens and the assertion of the eec do a vote on what to reissue

If the silver proof for this has the same limited mintage number as The Snowman silver proof then don’t wait around on this one, act quick because everybody else will be after seeing how quickly The Snowman sold out and what it was being flipped for on ebay.

Shame the Gruffalo piece (like the Snowman) is probably not going to be issued for actual circulation. The Royal Mint are of course required to make a profit, but with the risk of damaging the hobby for us real change-checkers out there. (and yes, I’ve bought the Snowman, but from you rather than pay for the Royal Mint packaging).
