The 2019 Paddington 50p – what we know so far…

The UK’s incredibly popular Paddington 50p coins are to be followed up by two brand new 2019 coins.

According to the Royal Proclamation, published on 11th April, there will be two new Paddington coins released this year.

The designs are suggested to depict Paddington Bear outside the White Tower at the Tower of London and Paddington Bear outside St Paul’s Cathedral.

It’s expected the coins will be issued later this year with commemorative collector’s editions available in cupro-nickel, Silver and Gold being made available.

Paddington’s journey continues for 2019!

Straight from the darkest Peru, Paddington made his way to the London, and in June 2018 was spotted sat on his suitcase beside the trains at Paddington Station.

Later that year the bear was back, this time proudly waving a Union Jack Flag outside Buckingham Palace.

His journey around London now continues as a new 50p coin is set to mark his latest adventures!

The next 50p collecting craze?

Although all the details have not been released yet and the actual designs are still top secret, following the popularity of last year’s coins, it seems likely that the latest Paddington 50p coin will be a real hit with the British public.

Hi Rachel, I managed to get £10 worth off 50p dated 2019 The shield in a sealed bag from the post office. so check out your local post office……….

    • Rachel Hooper on May 3, 2019 at 3:00 pm

Wow, what will you do with them all Denise?

    • Denise stark on May 3, 2019 at 3:13 pm

Hi Rachel. I’ve saved £4 worth in my book and gave the rest to family and friends. I also was looking in my change for the 2017 50p shield and found two more 2019 shield. So they are out now.

  2. Denise stark on May 3, 2019 at 11:41 am

Morning Rachel, Can you tell me if any of the £2 coins are released in circulation from 2017-2019. I have yet to find any……..

    • Rachel Hooper on May 3, 2019 at 1:25 pm

Hi Denise, we haven’t seen any of the £2’s issued since 2017 released yet unfortunately. Let’s hope some new £2’s go into circulation soon.

  3. Graham Tickner on May 3, 2019 at 11:04 am

The royal mint must make loads of money with new 10ps with A to Z 2018 plus 2019 will this continue year after year.my friends & I HAVE BE TOLD the 10ps are sent to areas that use a lot in there change so us down south won’t get any as we only spend lots of 50ps.

    • Rachel Hooper on May 3, 2019 at 1:42 pm

Hi Graham, coins are issued into circulation based on demand, so it’s down to the post offices, banks and cash distribution centres to order them in. Unfortunately this means that if there’s not much demand in your area it might be harder to find the A-Z 10ps, but as they’ve been circulating for over a year now we should start to see them turning up in more and more places across the UK.

  5. Denise stark on May 3, 2019 at 8:58 am

Morning, I am trying to find the ABC 10p and can not find any in circulation. Friends and family are saying the same. I work in a school and my students say they have not even seen them. Where do I find these elusive coins? Ive been to the post office with no luck.

  6. Phil on May 2, 2019 at 3:15 pm

I think we all know the New Paddington coins WONT go in to circulation, it Will just be a another money maker for royal MINT.

    • Rachel Hooper on May 2, 2019 at 3:31 pm

It hasn’t been confirmed either way yet, but we’re remaining hopeful.

    • Phil on May 9, 2019 at 10:00 am

Sorry i got it wrong was meant to say they will release them.

  7. Julie webb on April 26, 2019 at 5:20 pm

I’m lost when did the new 50p coin come out with shield ? Didn’t even know it was out
    Roll on Paddington coins

    • Rachel Hooper on April 29, 2019 at 8:01 am

The 2019 definitive Royal Shield design was released earlier this year. Keep your eyes peeled for one!

  8. Phillip Smith on April 26, 2019 at 11:44 am

I’ve only been collecting coins since last year and I’ve got a nice collection to leave my children so far. Finding the wright coins in your change is the real buzz and buying some from Westminster site is still exciting. We just can’t get every coin their is out there to have. Having new coins relest is something to look forward to if in cerculation or to buy it’s all great fun and probably one of the best hobbies to have. ?

    • Rachel Hooper on April 26, 2019 at 3:32 pm

Sounds like you’ve caught the collecting bug Philip! Glad you’re enjoying the hobby 🙂

  9. Phil on April 21, 2019 at 9:41 am

Will be just another money maker for the royal mint and other sites i don’t want to mention, with so many people finding the 2019 shield i do believe the mintage figures will be high, coin collecting has become just a money maker so many people/company’s nowadays it’s a shame, has taken out all the fun.

    • Rachel Hooper on April 23, 2019 at 8:36 am

It does seem that quite a lot of the new 2019 Royal Shield coins have been found, so it will be interesting to see what the mintage figure will be. It’s great that the coins is out there to find and add to your collection though, which is all part of the fun.

    • Martin Smith on April 24, 2019 at 6:04 pm

Quite right. The Royal Mint is not making many friends at the moment and if you have ever had cause to complain about the qualifying RM goods, as I have on many occasions, their response is sluggish and unresponsive.
I have bought from them in the past but am very much of a mind to draw a line under future purchases. Recently, I stayed up in the early hours to await the launch of a much heralded set of fifty pences – only to find there was no issue limit. What’s the point in that?
Anyway – to get to the point- finding a commemorative in your change gives me a kick more than buying. But where are all the A-Z ten pences?

      • Tom on May 2, 2019 at 9:27 am

Don’t you know anyone who works in the post office, it’s a well known fact that they are keeping them back for themselves.

      • Rachel Hooper on May 2, 2019 at 1:43 pm

Those with access to change certainly have a better chance of coming across different coin designs. Luckily there are so many different designs out there to collect 🙂

    • Dave on May 2, 2019 at 7:51 pm

      You’ve got it right on

    • Graham Tickner on May 3, 2019 at 10:49 am

I agree but all these ! So called coins of comics l think these are spoiling coin collecting,l think there should be section dedicated to proper coins within Westminster coins.l only collect English coins l like the other British iland coins as most of these are better look than ours..? Why.l have notice the depth of cut of the pictures on the 50ps is very poor if they went into general uses they would wear off in a year.
I think the royal mint has brought out the new 50p of the Pagoda just to make money again.

  10. Ridge on April 19, 2019 at 1:10 am

I haven’t been collecting coins for that long but have managed to get a half tidy start thanks to finding them in change ,coin runs and of course swapping. However I have already realised that the royal mint is taking advantage of the collectors by bringing out coin after coin that is not going into circulation. What’s the point of it the whole idea of collecting is trying to find one not by buying them for an extortionate price !!!!

    • Rachel Hooper on April 23, 2019 at 8:30 am

The good thing is that there are still so many coins out there to find and collect, but it really is a shame that some of the newer ones haven’t been issued for circulation. Let’s just hope the Paddington coins will be released as they would be great ones to be able to find.

      • Phil on May 4, 2019 at 10:58 am

Come on Rachel why would they release these Paddington and not the last one’s, its pretty much a know fact they won’t and will just be a money maker, the 2019shield is going to be a very high mintage.it gets a bit boring sometimes reading comments on here, sorry for being a killjoy, BUT the fun really has been taken out coin collecting, now it’s just about company’s/people making money.

      • Rachel Hooper on May 9, 2019 at 8:53 am

We’ve got to hope they’ll release at least some commemorative 50ps this year. I’m staying positive Phil 🙂

  11. Heather on April 16, 2019 at 9:55 pm

I have been collecting 50 pence coins for a while after watching a programme. I have about 10 collectors coins, A one being said to worth £4,55 A Peter Rabbit. Where do I sell them for these prices. I also have one that has 2 ships looks like the Spanish Armada ships. . But cant find any info on them

  12. James Brooker on April 14, 2019 at 12:10 pm

It’s all very well telling us about new Paddington bear 50s. They will of course NOT be circulated to the public for our collections. UNLESS we pay out and buy them. Which defeats the point of this site. It is called “Change CHECKER”. No point in checking our change if new coins are NOT going to be circulated. Where’s the joy in buying?

    • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 8:38 am

Hi James, we haven’t heard if these ones will go into circulation yet, but it will be fantastic if they do as it will give us something to look forward to. Of course there are still so many wonderful coins in circulation to find and collect. Do you have any you need for your collection?

    • Peter Hoare on April 15, 2019 at 11:37 am

I have to agree with James Brooker regarding the fact that the new Paddington 50p coins will not be released
into general circulation. What is the point? It is so unfair
It seems to be just taking advantage of genuine coin collectors.

      • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 3:34 pm

Let’s just hope they do go into circulation. The 2019 shield 50ps have been spotted so there is hope that more 50ps will enter circulation this year.

  13. JOEL ABEL on April 13, 2019 at 4:10 pm

Another two coins not to enter circulation, joke!

    • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 8:38 am

Fingers crossed they will go into circulation! Would be great to find them in your change.

  14. David Riches on April 13, 2019 at 12:34 pm

Best site for the latest in coin collections

  15. Andrew on April 13, 2019 at 12:07 pm

Do you know if these new Paddington coins will enter general circulation or not?

    • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 8:06 am

We don’t know yet, but I certainly hope so!

  16. Ronnie on April 12, 2019 at 10:45 pm

That good news i ma getting fed up of peter rabbit

  17. sheridan on April 12, 2019 at 6:53 pm

    I agree, interesting article above.
Am I right to say that these coins will NOT enter general circulation and will only be available in commemorative packs? Yikes!
If I am right, this coin collecting hobby is starting to cost a fortune with the amount of coins NOT being released into general circulation (I know I’m not the first to say this).

    • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 8:40 am

Thanks Sheridan. We don’t yet know if they will enter circulation, but I for one would love to find these coins in my change, so here’s hoping they will!

    • Craig on April 26, 2019 at 7:45 am

Coin collecting has really taken off since the olympic set was introduced. The Mint seem to be cashing in on this at the moment as any company would if demand is high. If its true that around 75% of olympic coins have been removed from circulation then thats probably at least £15million lost from the economy. Where have the Newton 50p’s or all the A-Z 10p’s gone? Vast majority are in collections. The Mint has to produce more replace these, at a cost to them. I think that’s why there will be lots of 2019 shield released and the commemoratives aren’t. Not that I like it though.

  18. Mike R. London on April 12, 2019 at 6:11 pm

Hi, Yesterday I found 50p shield in my change, not surprising you may say, however, this was dated 2019!
Have they been issued yet or do you think this somehow slipped through the net?

  19. Suzanne Hardman on April 12, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Ooooh how exciting, I love the Paddington coins.

  20. Jim on April 12, 2019 at 4:15 pm

I do hope these will be released into circulation as proper coins. We’ve already had 10 different 50p so far this year, most of which are as collectors editions only. I’ve just had my first 2019 definitive/shield 50p in change this week, very surprised to see it, so looks like there is still some demand from the banks for new coin.

    • Rachel Hooper on April 15, 2019 at 8:53 am

Hi Jim, I hope they go into circulation too! Would be great to find these coins in our change. Yes, the 2019 Royal Shield has now been released, so hopefully we’ll see more of the 2019 coins go into circulation.

      • KEVIN JEFFREY on May 2, 2019 at 2:07 pm

ive not seen any 2018 shields, but this week have found 3 2017 shields and have 3 2019 shields.

      • Rachel Hooper on May 2, 2019 at 2:17 pm

You’re very lucky to find 3 2017 shields Kevin! That’s actually the second rarest 50p in circulation.
