The 2020 Dinosaur coins – What we know so far…
2020 is already proving to be a big year for coin collectors, with an exciting line-up of coins already having been released and many more to look forward to.
But certain news was so colossal that it shook the coin collecting community!
The Royal Proclamation on the 8th November 2019 revealed a brand new series of dinosaur themed 50p coins would be released in 2020.
Three dino themed 50ps
Three designs were announced, including the Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus.
‘Megalosaurus’ is Greek for ‘great lizard’ and at seven to eight metres long it certainly lives up to its name! In 1676 the first Megalosurus bone was discovered in Oxfordshire and publication of the find is thought to make this dinosaur the very first to be described in scientific literature.
Iguanodon were large herbivores with distinctive thumb-like spikes. After Megalosaurus, these were the second type of dinosaur to be formally recognised.
Hylaeosaurus was an armoured dinosaur with at least three long spines along its shoulders. However, much of the anatomy of this dinosaur is still unknown due to the fact that very limited remains have been found.

Excitingly, these are the first ever UK dinosaur coins and collectors have been very excited for these roarsome coins to be let loose!

I totally agree with Dave and all the other coin collectors who had enough of paying money to own coins.
What started of as hobby for me has turned into me spending money to buy coins, it’s all a money making scheme for the mint.
Wonder what else is on the list, postman pat? Thomas the tank engine or perhaps they might even consider making teletubbies 50ps just to make money from collectors.
Completely agree with you. And all these so called releases are not actually in circulation. In fact ‘are’ these created by the Royal Mint or by some other company as they aren’t legal tender?
It has just become a racket now and not fun to find coins any more, shops won’t give you them, bank staff hoard them, even post office staff want to charge for them these days, i have lost interest and am spending my coins back now

Do you think these new coins will go into circulation this time please. It is getting a bit silly & expensive to collect the non-circulating coins. Its a shame.?
Hi Richard, unfortunately we have no control over which coins are released for circulation and we currently don’t know whether the Dinosaur 50ps will be collector’s editions only. Rachel, your parent company has a commercial arrangement with the Royal Mint to buy and then sell on many of these non-circulating coins, suggesting your company talks to them – I would have thought you would be in a position to raise the many concerns expressed in your blog about their current policy which is disappointing many collectors who enjoy the hobby of “Change-Checking”. Of the 21 different 2019 dated types of 50p issued this year, only 4 released to circulation, yet we are awash with 2019 shield 50p, at least here in Birmingham, suggesting a massive mintage – why couldn’t that have been spread across the designs, I’d have loved to seen the “New Pence Britannia” in circulation! (Your Face Value Coin Ballot a brilliant idea by the way, I’m not knocking that seeing as I have won twice!!)
Congrats on winning the Face Value Coin Ballot Jim! Which coins did you get? With regards to the different coins entering circulation, we don’t yet know the mintage figures for 2019 coins, so can’t determine how many of each design has been issued. The demand for coins issued for circulation is determined by UK banks and Post Offices and coins are then issued on behalf of HM Treasury who ultimately decide how many new coins are issued into circulation.
If they bring out a second series of these, see if they will put my mother in law on one, she’s a pain in buttasaurus ???????
Probably won’t be on general release we will have to play top price again.it just seem to be a money making scheme. I am getting fed up with the whole game of collecting ??.

Hi Steven unfortunately we only have a web app currently. You can however save a shortcut to your homescreen so that it’s easy to get to straight away and feels more like an app.
Surely it would make sense to start with some of the more well-known dinosaurs. One of them seems that it will be an artist’s impression as little is known of the actual animal
Hi Clive, initially I thought that too, but as the megalosaurus was the first dinosaur officially recorded in scientific literature it actually seems like a fitting place to start 🙂

I still haven’t seen ANY of these 10p coins, and don’t know of any one who has.
Were they ever put into general release or just issued to collectors?
Hi Dave, I’m yet to find a 10p in my change too. circulating mintage figures for the 2018 coins have been confirmed and there’s just 220,000 of each design out there, which means they are almost as rare as the Kew Gardens! Another 2.1 million in total were released this year, but that’s still a very small number and I imagine anyone who has been lucky enough to find one is holding on to it.
These should be a roaring success (get it)??????
