And, the best news is that this will kick-start a magical collection of 50p coins, all celebrating 25 years since the publication of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

100th Anniversary of the BBC 50p

The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was formed on 18 October 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Guglielmo Marconi.

Since establishment, the BBC has been shaped by some of the UK’s biggest innovators, from Marconi, to John Logie Baird. Baird used BBC frequencies to broadcast some of his first experimental television broadcasts from studios near Covent Garden in London.

The BBC is highly regarded for its award-winning creative output, trusted and impartial news services and innovative use of technology.

To commemorate the centenary of the BBC, The Royal Mint have confirmed that they will be issuing a brand new 50p in 2022, which has definitely got Change Checker excited!

As of the Royal Proclamation, on 16th December 2021, the design is said to feature a globe with transmitter waves accompanied by the inscription “1922-2022 100 YEARS OF OUR BBC INFORM EDUCATE ENTERTAIN”.

In 2020, The Royal Mint confirmed a brand new 9-coin series of 50ps celebrating 95 years of fun-filled adventure, each featuring a different inhabitant of Hundred Acre Wood.

The Winnie the Pooh 50p series continues in 2022, with the final three coins in the series being confirmed in the latest Royal Proclamation.

We can expect the final coins to depict designs of the following characters from A. A. Milne’s classic tale:

  • Winnie the Pooh and Friends
  • Kanga and Roo
  • Eeyore

These are some of the most famous characters from the story and we’re sure collectors will be racing to get their hands on these coins as soon as they’re issued!

      Hi Paul,

It sounds like you’ve got a very impressive collection of £2 coins already! Keep searching for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games £2 coin – it’s tricky to find because of its low mintage but keep checking because you never know what treasure could turn up in your change the next time you look 🙂

We’re awaiting further details of what the designs of the £2 coins issued as part of the 25th anniversary will look like – including what dates we can expect to see on them.

It would be great if they were issued individually – it would make for fantastic pairing alongside the original issues. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Of course, to find out more and to stay updated with any upcoming coins, keep your eyes on our Change Checker blog, as we’ll update you as soon as we hear more.

      Best,
      Alex

    • Alexandra on December 20, 2021 at 8:06 am

      Hi Martin,

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the £2 coin, The Royal Mint are re-issuing some of the UK’s most popular £2 coins. This means that the 2005 60th anniversary of the end of WW2 £2, the 2019 75th anniversary of D-Day, and more of our favourites are set to be re-issued, all unified by the inscription, “CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE £2”.

      I hope this clarifies.

      Best,
      Alex

  7. James Davis on December 16, 2021 at 9:09 pm

None of them will be for circulation I bet, it’s getting worse and worse for circulation hunters every year. Fewer £2 coins at first and now with most 50p’s as well.

    • Alexandra on December 20, 2021 at 8:12 am

We’re certainly keeping our fingers crossed that some of these coins will enter circulation – it would be great to see some new issues circulating in our change 🙂

We’ll keep you updated when we hear of any updates.

      Best,
      Alex

We can certainly expect to see some of our favourite £2 coins to return in 2022. It would be great to see some re-issues as it would make for a fantastic pairing with the original issues. We’ll keep Change Checkers updated as soon as we hear more 🙂

      Best,
      Alex
