The coin behind window twenty-one is the Cayman Islands 1 Cent.
The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the Western Caribbean Sea which has a population of approximately only 61,000. This low population means that the island’s coins have significantly lower mintages in comparison to UK coinage.
The obverse of this 1 Cent features the Arnold Machin portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse features a Grand Cayman Thrush which was native to the Cayman Islands before going extinct in the 1940’s. It was an ashy grey bird with a white underbelly. These beautiful birds became popular for collectors and hunters, and the last reliable report of a sighting of one was in 1938. Despite their extinction they are still celebrated on the island and on the country’s coinage.
The official language of The Cayman Islands is English.
