This £5 was issued to commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of the coronation of Anglo-Saxon King, Alfred the Great. Famous for his reforms on education, this £5 coin’s reverse design, by John Bergdahl, features a depiction of the Alfred Jewel, a famous Anglo-Saxon artifact that Alfred the Great commissioned to his people to help with reading. The obverse of this coin features the fifth portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
