Often dubbed ‘King of Dinosaurs’, the Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most fearsome predators to ever walk the earth. As part of The Royal Mint’s Tales of the Earth series, the T-Rex 50p kicked off the Iconic Specimens collection, which also features the Diplodocus 50p and the Stegosaurus 50p. The T-Rex 50p was designed by paleo-artist Robert Nicholls, with guidance from Professor Paul Barret from the Natural History Museum. On the reverse of the coin, a T-Rex can be seen in a defensive stance, bearing its tremendous teeth alongside a T-Rex skeleton. The inscriptions ‘TYRANNOSAURUS’ and ‘CRETACEOUS’ also feature on the design.
