The modern Olympic Games started in Athens in 1896 and have since become the greatest sporting event in the world. The games of 1908 were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, they were re-located to London. Of the 22 represented countries, Great Britain were the overall winners of the 1908 Olympics with a final gold medal tally of 56.
