Coin Information:

Britannia, the allegorical female figure that symbolises Britain, first appeared on Roman coins in the third century. This motif was revived in 1672 when the first base-metal coins, consisting of copper halfpence and farthings, were issued by authority of Charles II whose mistress, the Duchess of Richmond, was the model for Britannia. Since then the image has always been present on at least one denomination until 2008 when the 50p was re-designed.
