2022 UK Platinum Jubilee 50p

2022 sees Her Majesty become the first monarch in British history to reach her Platinum Jubilee, so it’s only fitting that this moment has been captured for the very first time on the UK’s most collected coin!

And, this UK first also features new designs on BOTH the reverse and obverse!

Experienced coin artist John Bergdahl has created a stunning commemorative Jubilee portrait of Her Majesty on horseback, which is reminiscent of previous jubilee designs, including the 1953 coronation crown!

1953 Coronation Crown

Created by design agency Osborne Ross, the reverse features the number 70 in a striking centralized design, with the dates 1952 and 2022, beneath The Queen’s royal cypher.

I’m sure you’ll agree that this coin is one of the most exciting issues we’ve ever seen.

We’ve never-before-seen a UK 50p mark such a significant event and it’s only right that the UK’s first royal 50p, should feature such an exciting design.

This is also the first time that we’ve ever seen the portrait of Her Majesty on horseback feature on the 50p!

This is an absolute MUST-HAVE for collectors. If you need reminding why, here are my 3 top reasons to add this coin to your collection:

  1. This is the UK’s FIRST royal 50p – making it a numismatic first
  2. For the first time on the 50p, we’ve seen the portrait of Her Majesty on horseback feature on the obverse design
  3. Her Majesty is the FIRST British Monarch to reach her Platinum Jubilee – a milestone few of us will see again.

2022 UK Platinum Jubilee £5

As the perfect accompaniment to this stunning new 50p, The Royal Mint have also issued a brand new £5 coin to celebrate Her Majesty’s Jubilee.

Set to rival the collecting frenzy of the Queen’s first Jubilee Crown released in 1977, this brand new release features a design created especially for collectors.

In 1977, Her Majesty celebrated 25 years on the throne – her Silver Jubilee and the first of her reign. The Royal Mint issued this commemorative crown. The coin’s reverse design is focused upon the Coronation theme and features the Ampulla and anointing spoon from the Royal regalia surrounded by a heraldic floral pattern and the Crown.

The coin’s obverse takes inspiration from the 1953 Coronation Crown, showing a newly designed image of the Queen on horseback.

Unusually, this coin does not feature an edge inscription or date on its reverse, making it the only crown of its kind at the time of issue. It was also one of the last crowns to be issued with a face value of 25 pence (commemorative crowns issued after 1990 have a face value of £5), which makes it continually sought-after among collectors!

Reminiscent of the 1953 Coronation Crown, the 2022 Platinum Jubilee £5 features a special obverse design of the Queen riding on horseback – only found on the individual release of this coin!

The reverse design by John Bergdahl includes the Queen’s garter robes in a fitting tribute to her 70 years upon the throne.

As you’d expect with such a stunning issue, this coin will come struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated quality, protectively encapsulated in Official Change Checker packaging.

First-ever Royal 50p! What will the mystery 50p obverse look like?

Change Checkers, we’ve got a special royal announcement…

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has confirmed that her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 will be celebrated with the UK’s FIRST-EVER Royal 50p!

* UPDATE *

The design of the UK’s FIRST ROYAL 50p has JUST been revealed by The Royal Mint! With Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee being the first in the history of our British Royal Family, the number 70 takes centre stage on the reverse design of this 50p.

The Royal Cypher EIIR is also shown on the design of this UK first, above the dates 1952-2022, in a poignant tribute to our nation’s longest reigning monarch.

What an outstanding issue this is going to be! We’ve never before seen a 50p mark such a significant event and it’s certainly got us wondering what this amazing 50p will look like! As this will be the FIRST-EVER UK Royal 50p, we’re expecting increased collector interest…

The Royal Proclamation has also raised an additional level of interest, revealing intriguing details of TWO different obverse designs – one featuring the normal Queen’s head design by Jody Clark and a second portraying Her Majesty on horseback, in what appears to be a nod to her original 1953 Coronation Crown.

We’ve only seen this happen once before which was for the Decimal Day 50p issued in the 2021 Annual Coin Set! The 50p from the Annual Set featured the original Arnold Machin portrait which featured on UK coinage during the time of the decimal change-over, on the obverse instead of her modern one.

According to the Proclamation, we’re set to see a number of UK firsts for this coin and we just can’t wait to find out more. It’s only right that the coin issued to mark the first monarch in British history to reach this milestone, should feature a design full of firsts too!

Previous Jubilee coins have proven so popular with collectors but historically these issues have been Crowns and £5 coins. So, I’m certain that the fact the Platinum Jubilee will be the first royal celebration on a UK 50p, it will make this the most popular 50p to date, especially if we can find it in our change!

The six-sided Diamond Jubilee coin that never was…

Did you know that a special six-sided coin was very nearly released to commemorate one of the most significant celebrations in British history – the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee?

In fact, the coin was so close to being produced that the design was nearly sent off for Royal approval before the proposal was eventually rejected by senior staff at the Royal Mint.

But what could this coin have looked like? Stay tuned as we explore more in this blog…

What the UK’s first 60p could have looked like

A document from Kevin Clancy, secretary to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee, and addressed to the Master of the Mint at the time – Chancellor George Osborne, stated “The proposed coin would be a six-sided bi-colour coin with round of nickel-brass and a shaped outer of cupro-nickel.”

The document also stated: “It is recommended that an entirely new denomination coin – a 60p piece – should be produced to commemorate the 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign”.

Whilst the coin was proposed to be a commemorative-only issue and wouldn’t enter circulation, the idea for the coin was abandoned all together, as papers from the Royal Mint Advisory Committee revealed the commemorative coin programme was already ‘sufficiently comprehensive’.

This programme in question of course ended up bringing us the stunning 2012 Diamond Jubilee £5 Coin.

This was the first coin ever to be struck to commemorate a Diamond Jubilee – there were no special coins for Queen Victoria’s in 1897!

The obverse featured a new portrait of Her Majesty crowned and wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, created especially for the Diamond Jubilee by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Also designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, the obverse features a portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth just as she appeared in her first portrait with the Latin words DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS (May God Guide My Steps).

This £5 isn’t the only remarkable issue we’ve seen commemorating Her Majesty’s Jubilees…

1993 Coronation 40th Anniversary £5

1993 Coronation 40th Anniversary £5.

This £5 coin was issued to mark 40 years since the Queen’s coronation in 1953 – her Ruby Jubilee.

The obverse features the original portrait by Mary Gillick placed in a circle surrounded by eight mounted trumpeters of the Household Cavalry separated by swords and sceptres.

The reverse features the Crown of St Edward which was used at the Coronation, set within 40 radiating trumpets.

The words FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU, from the Coronation oath, are inscribed at the top, with the double dates 1953 and 1993 appearing at the foot.

In 2002, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne, the Royal Mint produced this £5 coin.

On one side appears an unusual bust portrait of the Queen wearing the robes of state. The dramatic impact of this motif are heightened by the absence of any inscription other than the value in small lettering around the foot.

The reverse design, as with the original Coronation crown of 1953 features the Queen on horseback. The Latin motto AMOR POPULI PRAESIDIUM REG(inae) meaning ‘The love of the people is the Queen’s protection’ was last used on the coinage of Charles I.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022

In 2022, Her Majesty will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, after a magnificent 70 years of service to the throne.

According to the Government website, plans are already in place to mark this anniversary, including collaborations with “some of the UK’s leading creative minds, event organisers and world class digital design companies”.

In keeping with tradition, a Platinum Jubilee medal is said to be awarded to people “who work in public service including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison services.

This tradition stretches back to the reign of Queen Victoria when an official medal was designed to mark her 50th anniversary on the throne”.

Whilst there has been no official confirmation of a Platinum Jubilee commemorative coin in the works, we’re certainly going to keep our fingers crossed that this magnificent anniversary will be celebrated on our UK coinage.
