Brand New Official UK Remembrance Day Coin issued today…
2018 is an incredibly poignant year as the world commemorates the First World War Armistice Centenary concluding four years of bloody and gruelling combat, the like of which had never been seen before.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the Allies of WWI and Germany signed an agreement for cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of the war, at last bringing peace after 4 years of conflict.
As a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, a brand new £5 coin has been issued by The Royal Mint for 2018.
Designed by Royal Mint engraver Laura Clancy, the focal point of this year’s design is a stunning poppy design symbolic of the resilient and determined poppies that grew amidst the chaos in the valley of the Somme.
Like last year’s Remembrance Day coin, selective colour printing has been expertly used to draw attention to the vibrant red poppy design, a truly touching tribute to those lost in the war.
We expect this year’s centenary coin to have a very strong reception, based not only on its stunning design, but also the significance of this 100 year anniversary since Armistice.

SIX £5 notes worth £50,000 are kicking about in the UK…
Last month, we were gripped by football fever and the hopes of England finally bringing football home for the first time since 1966. The nation was in awe of our Golden Boot winning captain, Harry Kane and the fantastic effort of our young team, who made it through to the semi-finals before meeting their match against Croatia.
So, much to our disappointment, football didn’t come home this year, but something very special indeed has happened as a result of England’s champion goal-scorer…

A number of unique £5 notes, engraved with a tiny portrait of footballer Harry Kane with the inscription ‘World Cup Golden Boot Winner 2018’, have been put into circulation by specialist micro-engraver Graham Short.
Short has been using fine needles to carefully etch Kane’s portrait on the ‘clear section’ of the polymer £5 notes to celebrate the England Football team, taking six days to complete each inticate design.

Six notes will be distributed by Mr Short, with the first being given to Harry Kane himself and the others being spent across the UK, including the village of Meriden (West Midlands), Edinburgh and Merthyr Tydfil. The final note is rumoured to be spent in Northern Ireland this week, so Change Checkers all over the UK, keep your eyes peeled!
Graham Short has revealed the serial numbers of these notes for you to look out for:

Each note is insured for £50,000, so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on one can expect that sum if they auction off the fiver.
You may remember our previous blog detailing some of Mr Short’s other work which featured a micro-engraving of Jane Austen on the Polymer banknotes of which there is still one left to find.
Eagle eyed collectors have been hunting down this final note and I’m certain will be just as excited as we are to hear about the Harry Kane notes.

Revealed: The UK’s rarest £5 Coin
It has now been revealed that the UK has a new ‘rarest’ £5 coin!
The £5 coin that commemorates the last Stuart Queen, has just become the rarest UK £5 coin – knocking the 2011 Prince Philip £5 off the top spot.
The £5 coin commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the death of Queen Anne – the first queen of Great Britain who left behind political stability and prosperity. The design bears an elegant portrait of Queen Anne, styled by Mark Richards FRBS as an eighteenth-century miniature.
It was likely to have been popular with historians when it was released in 2014 but just 12,181 of these coins were struck in Brilliant Uncirculated presentation packs making it the rarest UK £5 coin ever.
If you want to know exactly how rare your £5 coins are, you can read our previous blog here >>

The 2014 Queen Anne £5 – the UK’s rarest £5 Coin
And the announcement of this coin as the UK’s new rarest £5 coin reiterates the point that a less interesting theme or design on a coin, can be a real hidden gem for coin collections.
Let me explain…
It’s obvious that popular coin issues create instant and on-going demand for a coin, but the same can be said for ‘less interesting’ coin designs. This is because the less coins that are sold, the lower the final number of units that are available to future collectors.

The 2011 Prince Philip 90th Birthday £5 has a mintage of just 18,730 and is now the 2nd rarest UK £5 Coin.
But whilst most collectors would shy away from unpopular themes, it is these very coins that are likely to become the most sought after in years to come. And this 2014 Queen Anne £5 is a prime example along with the 2011 Prince Philip £5 coin.
The Prince Philip £5 coin is extremely sought after by collectors and is virtually impossible to get hold of on the secondary market, so it is very likely that the same will happen with the 2014 Queen Anne £5. In fact, sold listings on eBay show that the Prince Philip £5 coin regularly fetches in excess of £50.
So if you’re lucky enough to have the 2014 Queen Anne £5 coin in your collection, make sure you keep hold of it. Demand for this coin is likely to increase dramatically.
And remember, when it comes to collecting, there is one fact which is always inevitable –the rarest coins are always in highest demand.
Unfortunately we do not have any 2014 Queen Anne £5 coins to offer you today but if you’re interested, the 2017 UK Prince Philip CERTIFIED BU £5 Coin is available to order.
Could this new 2017 UK Prince Phillip coin have an even lower mintage?
