The Limited Edition Gibraltar King Charles III Definitive Coins
Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the very first King Charles III effigy was introduced onto Gibraltar’s commemorative coinage. However, the following year, the first circulating Gibraltar currency collection featuring His Majesty’s was issued, celebrating his coronation.
The 2023 Limited Edition Gibraltar Currency Coin Collection was the first full currency set available to feature the Raphael Maklouf King Charles III effigy on the obverse, including all denominations from 1p-£5, but it also included the last ever single metal round pound to be issued.
A closer look
In honour of the new Carolean era, the 2023 Limited Edition Gibraltar Currency Coin Collection includes all definitive coin denominations, each featuring different elements, imagery and items related to King Charles III and his coronation.
One Penny
The 1p coin features the King’s royal cypher within a floral wreath.
Two Pence
The 2p coin features a depiction of Windsor Castle within a floral wreath.
Five Pence
The reverse design on the 5p coin shows an illustration of The Sovereign’s Orb.
Ten Pence
On the reverse design on the 10p coin is a depiction of The Sovereign’s Sceptre.
Twenty Pence
The 20p features the a depiction of the Tudor Crown along with the inscription ‘LONG TO REIGN OVER US • GOD SAVE THE KING’.
Fifty Pence
The intricate design on the 50p features the door to Westminster Abbey and the inscription ‘THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY KING CHARLES III • 05.05.2023’.
One Pound
The £1 coin in this collection was the last ever single metal, round pound coin to be issued, as Gibraltar’s 2024 annual issue featured the new 12-sided, bi-metal £1 coin specification. This meant that Gibraltar was the first British Overseas Territory to circulate the 12-sided £1. The reverse design on this round £1 coin features the Coronation Chair and the inscription, ‘LONG TO REIGN OVER US • GOD SAVE THE KING’.
Two Pounds
The £2 coin features the Gibraltar Crest in the centre, with an inscription around the edge reading ‘HIS MAJESTY KING CHARLES III • GOD SAVE THE KING’.
Five Pounds
The £5 coin features the Gibraltar Coat of Arms.

Issued to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III, the Coronation 50p is only the second 50p to enter circulation featuring the King on the obverse.
Uncrowned portrait
Unlike the collector version of the Coronation 50p, which features a special crowned portrait of the King on the obverse, the version entering circulation will feature the standard uncrowned portrait by Martin Jennings.
Typically, male monarchs don’t wear crowns on UK coinage, however as a special issue for the Coronation, the collector versions of the Coronation 50p and £5 both feature His Majesty wearing the Tudor Crown.
The circulation version of the Coronation 50p will feature the uncrowned portrait of King Charles – the same one that has appeared on all UK commemorative coins issued since the portrait was announced.
So, the hunt is on to find a Coronation 50p in your change with the uncrowned portrait and keep it next to your crowned collector version.

The second EVER King Charles III circulating 50p
Back in December 2022, 4.9 million Queen Elizabeth II Memoriam 50ps entered circulation. As it was the first ever circulating coin to bear the King’s portrait, collectors raced to find it in their change.
We asked you to help us hunt down the first King Charles III 50p by entering your postcode into our map as soon as you found it. 113 locations were recorded on our collector map all the way from Inverness to Penzance, but it turned out the place where you’re most likely to find the first King Charles 50p in your change was Newcastle!

Change Checker LIVE Coronation 50p Swap! Join us at the New Forest Show…
In celebration of King Charles III’s Coronation this year, the UK’s FIRST EVER Coronation 50p has been issued, and we’ll be swapping it at the New Forest Show!
We know that this coin will be entering circulation later in 2023, but a special Crowned Portrait obverse design has been issued just for collectors – and we want to give you the chance to own one for face value!
This version of the coin won’t be found in your change, but you can add it to your collection by swapping an old 50p for the brand new one when you join us at our next Change Checker Live Event.
Join us at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show from Tuesday 25th to Thursday 27th July and bring along ANY UK 50p coin to swap for the 2023 King Charles III 50p with the special Crowned obverse!
The New Forest & Hampshire County Show
The event is an annual three day agricultural show held near Brockenhurst in Hampshire. Whilst show jumping is a major feature, several other livestock competitions also take place. Visitors can enjoy a wander around the trade stands as well as sample some local food and drink.

The show is rated among the top ten agricultural shows in the country and a visit from Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012 boosted its profile to new heights. Considering the show’s popularity and rich heritage, we simple had to make it the destination for our next coin swap.
