CONFIRMED: an additional 2.6 Million A-Z 10ps will enter circulation this month…
The Royal Mint and HM Treasury have just confirmed that a further 2.6 million A-Z 10p coins will enter circulation in the coming weeks.
This time the coins will be distributed through more normal networks including banks and cash distribution centres.

This will be welcome news to collectors who have been struggling to lay their hands on the new 10ps since the initial release in March. We’re hopeful that additional volumes will continue to be struck in line with UK requirements and of course the massive collector demand.

I have been asking at post office counters over the last few months about the new 10p but having no luck
Today I enquired at one,and was asked which ones I needed .I could have got all 26
I couldn’t believe my luck. I was then told they were £4 each coin because they weren’t in circulation yet,to which I contested
No wonder they are hard to come by when you’ve got unscrupulous people like this.
Hi Allan, how bizarre! We can confirm they are definitely in circulation and people are starting to find them in their change. Hopefully you’ll come across some soon, or find a Post Office which is more helpful!
Do you think they could mint more next year?, and if they do that would the coins have the 2019 stamp?

Hi Tom, The Royal Mint does not actually have any real control over where and when coins go into circulation. This is essentially managed between HM Treasury and the large cash distribution services run by the Post Office and some banks, as well as private operators. It’s only when they are short of a particular denomination that they call off stocks from The Royal Mint, who act as the manufacturer of the coin on behalf of the Treasury. Therefore we might see more coins in certain areas that have a higher demand for 10ps compared to other areas. Thanks, Rachel
Did I hear that change checker was looking at expanding the coin database to include other commonwealth countries IE Gibraltar, Isle of man ect.
If so do you have a target date

This is really good news, though 2.6 million (divided by 26 letters) is still just a tiny amount in coinage terms. I’m still waiting to get a 2017 ordinary 10p, let alone 2018! (had a 2017 5p for the first time last week). The Royal Mint have been undertaking a “Cupro-Nickel replacement programme” since 2013 (check out the Royal Mint website for details) and recovering the old cupro-nickel 5 & 10p’s (pre-2011) from the banks. But that seems to have stalled as a good 40% of the 1000+ 10p’s I’ve checked in my (un-successful) A-Z hunt are still pre 2011. Lots of scope in other words for the Royal Mint to mint large numbers of A-Z 10p’s and work with the banks to complete the replacement programme. Win-Win for us change-checkers.

What was a harmless hobby has become a pain. Too many people holding onto to coins and selling them at a vast profit. £2.00 for a circulated 10p…i think not.
Still pleased to hear that banks etc will have them rather than just post offices.
Time will tell if they go into “proper” circulation.

Hi David, unfortunately we don’t know how these numbers will be split for each letter, if it will be an even 200,000 each or if some letters will have more minted than others. It will be very interesting to see if any patterns emerge as people start to find more of them in their change though!
Does this mean that an EXTRA 2.6 million will be minted on top of what’s already been minted earlier this year?, or are they just releasing what has already been minted earlier this year?
