The Rosalind Franklin 50p – What we know so far…
Did you know that a Rosalind Franklin 50p will be released this year?
The Royal Proclamation from the 12th of March 2020 confirmed that a 50p will be released in 2020 celebrating the life and achievements of British scientist, Rosalind Franklin – and you can now sign up for updates!
The news comes after the worldwide popularity of the 2019 Stephen Hawking 50p, which was the first coin in the Innovators of Science series.
Whilst it hasn’t been confirmed, we can assume the Rosalind Franklin 50p will be the next in the series and we’re sure it’ll spark up chemistry with collectors.
The 50p is said to feature the inscription ‘ROSALIND FRANKLIN DNA’ and ‘PHOTOGRAPH 51’.
Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist and X-Ray crystallographer whose work was central to the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA.
The inscription ‘PHOTOGRAPH 51’ references the x-ray diffraction image of DNA that Raymond Gosling took under the supervision of Franklin. This was the very photo that led Watson and Crick to believe the structure of DNA was a double-helix.
Although all the details have not been released yet and the actual design is still top secret, it seems likely that the Rosalind Franklin 50p coin will be hugely popular with the British public.

The 2020 Dinosaur coins – What we know so far…
2020 is already proving to be a big year for coin collectors, with an exciting line-up of coins already having been released and many more to look forward to.
But certain news was so colossal that it shook the coin collecting community!
The Royal Proclamation on the 8th November 2019 revealed a brand new series of dinosaur themed 50p coins would be released in 2020.
Three dino themed 50ps
Three designs were announced, including the Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus.
‘Megalosaurus’ is Greek for ‘great lizard’ and at seven to eight metres long it certainly lives up to its name! In 1676 the first Megalosurus bone was discovered in Oxfordshire and publication of the find is thought to make this dinosaur the very first to be described in scientific literature.
Iguanodon were large herbivores with distinctive thumb-like spikes. After Megalosaurus, these were the second type of dinosaur to be formally recognised.
Hylaeosaurus was an armoured dinosaur with at least three long spines along its shoulders. However, much of the anatomy of this dinosaur is still unknown due to the fact that very limited remains have been found.
The UK’s first dinosaur coins
Excitingly, these are the first ever UK dinosaur coins and collectors have been very excited for these roarsome coins to be let loose!
Of course we’ve already seen the release of the 2020 Megalosaurus 50p, which proved a roaring success with collectors, but if you’d like to be kept up to date with all the latest information about the 2020 Dinosaur 50p coins, simply sign up using the form below.

The Stephen Hawking 50p – what we know so far…
A Stephen Hawking 50p has just been announced and this new coin for 2019 is set to be out of this world!
The latest Royal Proclamation has revealed that a brand new 50p coin will be issued by The Royal Mint this year, celebrating the life of one of the world’s most acclaimed physicists and ambassadors for science – Stephen Hawking.
The 50p design will feature a stylized depiction of a black hole with the inscription “STEPHEN HAWKING” and the entropy equation.
As a great innovator in his field and one of the most famous British scientists of modern times, it seems a fitting tribute that a new coin should be issued featuring Stephen Hawking.
His breakthrough ideas on the workings of the universe can be seen as a significant contribution to humanity, making the complexities of physics relatable for the everyday person.
Interestingly, Stephen Hawking could become one of only three people in British history to be commemorated on a coin within a year of their death, alongside Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother.
Although all the details have not been released yet and the actual design is still top secret, it seems likely that the Stephen Hawking 50p coin will be hugely popular with the British public.
